Eli Schmeltzer, A Teacher at Yeshiva Torah Temimah

I am extending a belated welcome to a member of this year’s crop of new teachers at Yeshiva Torah Temimah (YTT) faculty, Rabbi Eli Schmeltzer. He started in the fall. Rabbi Schmelczer has moved around a lot in recent years. Some of the places he has alighted include a mechina yeshiva in Miami, the NMB Kollel, and a Yeshiva Gedola Merkaz Hatorah Tiferes Mordechai of Montreal.

I have been told by several sources that Rabbi Ronald Greenwald of Monsey is conducting inquiries about him on behalf of YTT. I am told that Ronnie is inclined see the best in Rabbi Schmelczer and insists allegations against him thus far are unfounded. I have no idea what considerations are motivating Ronnie.

Being a teacher in Torah Temimah would appear to be a demotion after being a principal or a rosh kollel in his last three jobs. But who knows. Maybe he just loves being in Flatbush in the radiant presence of Leopold Lipa Margulies. Perhaps he is drawn to the charms of working in a place that once employed Yehudah Kolko. Maybe he is innately modest and no longer needs the burdens and adulation of doing management work and perfers being close to the adolescent boys in the yeshiva.

Time will tell.

In the meantime, a civil lawsuit is still in progress against Torah Temimah by the families of boys who allege YTT responsiblity for their being molested by Yehudah Kolko who taught there till he was arrested and subsequently pleaded guilty for misconduct with those boys.

  1. What accusations were made about him?

As an aside I would not be surprised if the Torah Temimah job pays considerably better than the principal or rosh kollel jobs.

  2. Over the years, I have seen Rabbi Eli Schmeltzer’s name pop up on UOJ, FM and similar websites. Bascially, all the articles – LIKE THIS ONE – just mention his name and then simply says that there are rumors/allegations/accusations against him. Never once have I seen something specific about him, only his name and vague references. All questions for specifics have gone unanswered.

    • I do not publish all or even most allegations of which I am aware. I also confine myself carefully so my postings will not expose me to legal liability or to the hassle of lawsuits. However, bear in mind that it is the nature of the sex abuse, especially in the orthodox community, that only a tiny fraction of all true crimes ever reach the courts. Thanks to the energetic efforts of many leaders in the orthodox world that situation is not changing very much though there has been some progress. Ben, be my guest in helping to change that situation in general even if you are skeptical about this case. You could start by writing legislators in the NYS Senate urging them to support Margaret Markey’s legislation to extend the statute of limitations for abuse of children.

      • Your response is completely fair, particularly if you are trying to portoect yourself. BUT, this is exactly the danger of even putting up a name, it could ruin someone’s life who does not deserve it (see recent letter to the editor on Matzav.com). I have no idea whether Eli Schmeltzer has done anything inappropriate. All I know is that for several years, on several websites, now including yours, his name has appeared in a way to suggest that he has done something inappropriate, yet no one has specified any specific accusation, nor offered to answer any question, no matter how directly asked. That, I find odd.
