Yesterday I posted RCA Is Wrong When It Says, “Belsky Agrees With Us”. Emanuel Newgant commented,
Unfortunately, this is not the only dichotomy in RCA statements. Here the RCA states
“We trembled upon hearing the terrible things Rabbi Ovadia Yosef said in regards to his honor [Rabbi Stav],” RCA President Shmuel Goldin and Vice President Leonard Matanky wrote in Hebrew to Rabbi Stav.
In the latest Kolko case [Yosef as opposed to his uncle, Yehudah] it would have been completely appropriate to see:
“We trembled upon hearing the terrible things Rabbi Yisroel Belskey said in regards to his honor,” RCA President Shmuel Goldin and Vice President Leonard Matanky wrote in Hebrew to Rabbi S. (father of Kolko’s victim) [who was publicly slandered by Rabbi Yisroel Belsky who called the father, a molester].
Apparently, the RCA will rise to the defense of a prominent Israeli religious Zionist candidate who is a serious contender to become next Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel. In this case they took on Rav Ovadia Yosef, indisputably one of the greatest torah scholars of our generation and the acknowledged rabbinical leader of the Sephardi world.
However, Rabbi Yisroel Belsky is an asset of the modern orthodox world who helps the Orthodox Union (OU) Kosher certification gain acceptance in the ultra orthodox world. Besides, the man he slandered, Rabbi S., is not modern orthodox, just an extraordinary ultra orthodox talmid chacham forced out of Lakewood. So, the RCA never condemned Rabbi Belsky for slandering Rabbi S.
Hypocrisy? You be the judge.
If this hypocrisy bothers you, contact the RCA or any rabbi you know who is a member of the RCA and let them know how you feel.
ACT NOW before they start their National Convention on June 30, 2013.
