A Suspicious Charity Collector in Passaic

Gershon Silber/Zilber was reported on Yeshiva World News as a meshulach (charity collector) who was not to be trusted around children in January. He was arrested in Essex County, NJ on May 23.

It seems he is now making the rounds in Passaic and again provoking a lot of suspicion according to an email sent out by info@ourkehila.com on Wednesday, June 19 around noon. He was reported to local police after lurking on Amsterdam Avenue and watching Bais Yaakov girls on their way to school.

  1. Warning About Suspicious Individual In Lakewood

Gershon Silber“According to to first hand and verified reports, there has been several incidents with Mr. Silber involving children here in Lakewood, as well as in Boro Park and in Monsey. He has also physically threatened many adults. There have been many other incidents involving this individual as well.”

In an “urgent notice regarding a supposed ‘meshulach’” [traveling fundraiser], The Lakewood Scoop writes that according to the ruling of three rabbis in Lakewood:

“we are hereby notifying our readers of an individual – a supposed ‘Meshulach’– who residents should be cautious of. The individual goes by the name Gershon Silber.

“According to to first hand and verified reports, there has been several incidents with Mr. Silber involving children here in Lakewood, as well as in Boro Park and in Monsey. He has also physically threatened many adults. There have been many other incidents involving this individual as well.

“Yesterday, police were called on the man after a particular incident, of which we – and others, received a first hand report about.

“[Community activists] are urging residents to keep away from him, and not allow him into your home, or near your children.

“Mr. Silber may be holding certificates from various Vaadim around the Country,‘but they should not be viewed as authentic’, a party involved warned.”

  2. By the blood liable against the jews they claimed that the jews, kidnap and kill innocent children to use their blood for Matzoh. So they came to & destroy the jews. To save innocent children. They weren’t jew haters, but heard such terrible news about the jews. Here too people hear such terrible accusations that have no source. Mr silber called the website that published the article. The Lakewood scoop to din torah. Within 15 minutes of receiving the hazmana (letter to come to din torah) they removed the original article. They refuse to come to din torah cause they know, they’ll lose anyways. But the damage has been done. And Gershon silber name has been ruined. Be careful from spreading false rumors. You wouldn’t want anyone doing it to you.

  3. “Verified reports in other communities” don’t exist. “As per the P’sak of three nRabbonim in Lakewood…” – it’s a bogus. Not a single Rav or a Posek in Lakewood has ever been named to support this outpouring of hatred. Yet, there are numerous Rabbonim in Lakewood (Rabbi Rabinowitz is one of them) who could attest to his innocence. Gershon is a good man and has not done anything wrong. There is a certain influential individual in Lakewood who uses his influence to spread these lies via every media channel available: yeshivaworld.com and alike who are just to happy to publish another “hot” story. This individual also got Gershon arrested on immigration charges. Let’s just ask ourselves: Is there any proof to all these accusations beyond garbage in blogs? Why not a single Rov ever been named to support these accusations, yet there are numerous Rabbonim who are saying for a long time already that these accusations are baseless?
It’s Ellul. True, accusations are terrible, but instead of rushing to add our comments with more lashon hara and motze shem rah about a person we don’t know personally, let’s just try to think for a second how does he feel if he is in fact falsely accused and became an object of such a universal hatred and a libel. We all have more or less comfortable lifes with families, friends, social standing. Imagine not having a family, having to make a living by going places and collect, has noone to turn to because people try to make a point to spit at you, point fingers at you and denigrate you. And when you ask: Why???? you’d be pointed to anonymous blogs citing anonymous non-existing Rabbonim. In these few days before Rosh Hashanah let’s just try to dan lekaf zchus and hopefully Hashem will judge us the same way.
