There was a lot of talk that District Attorney Charles Joe Hynes had cut a deal with both factions of the large Satmar groups to secure their endorsement for his reelection campaign in return for his continued go-easy treatment of Hasidic offenders.
Well it seems the rumors were false or thinking changed in the last-minute, perhaps because they smelled a loser in Hynes.
In any event, the house organs of the two factions, the Blatt and the Yid printed their last issues before the election and they both took a pass on endorsing anyone in the Brooklyn District Attorney race. In spite of a lot of talk by David Greenfield, the Hasidic Rebbes with significant followers have taken a pass on this race with the minor exception of Rabbi Ungar of the smaller Bobov-45 faction who went for Hynes.
Hasidim in Brooklyn will vote their conscience or their prejudices. Right now Hynes is resented for his mafia comments and his prosecution of Weberman. Some Hasidim may have bought the Greenfield propaganda that Thompson is an anti-Semite. My best guess is that the ultra orthodox vote will divide fairly evenly such that it will not be an important factor in the outcome of this election. So much for the myth of the decisive ultra orthodox voting block.
Caveat: If either candidate suddenly pulls ahead, they may join the bandwagon and suddenly endorse and use their last minute get out the vote operation to boost their showing on behalf of the likely winner. But that is not the sort of thing that determines who is likely to win.
UPDATE (9/7/13): On erev Rosh Hashanah the Aron Teitelbaum faction of Satmar did endorse Charles Hynes through flyers signed by many of their key lay leaders. As of posting, the Zalman Leib faction still had not taken a position on the DA race.
