Lhota Pays Visit to Boro Park’s Shul for Scandal Where the Molesters Prey

Shmarya Rosenberg reported in Failed Messiah that Republican NYC Mayoral Candidate, Joe Lhota visited a notorious site of sex abuse, Shomer Shabbos Synagogue, on the advice of his handler, Michael Fragin. One of its most notorious denizens is Jerry (Yechiel) Brauner who got a sweetheart deal, courtesy of  Brooklyn DA Charles Joe Hynes. I have written about them in the past with my post, The Shul for Scandal: Where the Molesters Prey.

It amazes me that politicians of all stripes are so insensitive that they give respectability to such places. But then they figure if molesting kids is OK for Borough Park, why should they worry about it. This has to change.

Update 9/17/13 8 pm: A colleague points out that it may be unfair to Lhota to blame him for not knowing the reputation of the place. In all liklihood, Lhota did not know. But at some point politicians have to start demanding of their orthodox liaisons that they steer them clear of those culpable in the worst way. Frankly, it must be said that this is a problem of politicians in NYC across a broad spectrum because frankly it is hard to deal with the ultra orthodox establishment without dealing with people who are culpable in ignoring or covering up sex abuse. Shomer Shabbos is a particularly bad place. I was informed of another alleged groping by Brauner in public just in the last week. So at least they can avoid the worst of the worst. But I will concede that it is a tough job for a politician to deal with the ultra orthodox leadership and avoid this kind of scandal.

    • MAZEL TOV they took off rabbi Weinberger from cong sharey tfilah lawerence this week his name from the stationery!!
could you please post as to why he was fired so future shuls do not rehire him!

  1. I have met Fragin who is not Hasidic or anything like that. He is a politician who has held various posts on Long Island at the County & Village levels. I seriously doubt that he would know some dirty old man has been drifting through a Hasidic synagogue in Brooklyn to grope little boys.

I asked someone in Bensonhurst which is not that far and they are under the impression that this synagogue is something like a Grand Central Station of prayer that is as crowded as the Tokyo stock exchange. It seems unlikely that there can be complete control in such an institution. That’s not to say that management should not throw out any troublemakers if they are detected entering

    • Fragin may not know, but then he should be pissed at his local connection who did not give him a heads up. Read my linked article re well known established molesters and management treating them very nicely, like giving Jerry Brauner keys. and having known molesters be baal tefilah on yom kippur.

  2. Wow, you got mentioned by name in Yeshiva World, but they conveniently failed to mention that you objected to Shomer Shabbos because it harbors molesters.

  3. Recently a shul that Brenner used to frequent decided to do something about child safety. So they installed video cameras.

The cameras were publicly displayed and everyone knew about them. Brenner who obviously has a problem, couldn’t help himself and allegedly groped a child on camera!!!

So they immediately threw him out of that shul. (He probably just increased his Shomer Shabbos Shul attendance!!!)

Yerachmiel, at this point I think throwing a molester out of your shul, for him to go elsewhere is wrong. It seems to me just as morally bankrupt as schools that dumped a predator, but allowed him to get a job in another school.

Obviously the only solutions are jail or a very intensive and properly administered rehab program. In absence of that, will shaming one particular shul until they expel him do any good? Will he end up going to a place where they are not aware of his strange and terribly damaging taste??
