Chaim Halpern is the Hasidic rabbi of a synagogue in London’s Haredi neighborhood, Golders Green. However, most other rabbis in the neighborhood have condemned him for sexual misconduct with women he counseled. His father, Rabbi Elchonon (Chuna) Halpern just passed away. The Haredi websites, Matzav and Yeshiva World News just published death notices listing him and his brothers as rabbis. In contrast, the Baltimore Jewish Life did not call this miscreant a rabbi, even though he has ordination and a congregation. Instead, their notice includes this text:
“He is survived by a large family of rabbonim, marbitzei Torah and baalei chesed. They include his son-in-law, the Nadvorna Rebbe of Haifa; his son-in-law, the Makova Gaavad; his son-in-law, the Chernobyl Rebbe; his son, Rav Yitzchak Aryeh Leibish Halpern, rov of Ramot Gimmel; his son, Rav Yisroel Shmuel Dovid Nachum Halpern, rov in Hendon, London; his son, Chaim Aharon Tzvi Halpern; his son, Rav Shalom Yosef Halpern, rov in New York; his son, Rav Moshe Yehuda Ber Halpern, rov of Bais Medrash Bais Shmuel in London founded by his father; his son-in-law, Rav Moshe Chaim Bransdorfer of London; and his son-in-law, Rav Yosef Moshe Schneerson, rosh yeshiva of Tchebin.”
Kudos to the Baltimore Jewish Life for the deliberate slight. Sex offenders should not be honored as rabbis.
PS- Hamodiah also refused to publish a nichum aveilim (shiva ) listing for Avrohom Mondrowitz when his mother died in 2010. According to halachah, nichum aveilim is not a question of kovod hameis (honoring the deceased) but a kindness to the surviving relatives. There is no obligation to do it for a rasha (an evil one)
