Court rejects Todros Grynhaus’s appeal against jail sentence for child sex assaults

“Todros Grynhaus, a ‘dangerous and manipulative’ former teacher who abused two teenage girls has had his appeal against his prison sentence thrown out.

“Todros Grynhaus, a rabbi’s son and prominent member of the Charedi community in Salford, was jailed for 13 year and two months at Manchester Crown Court last July.

“He challenged the sentence at London’s Criminal Appeal Court on Thursday, with his lawyers arguing it was ‘far too long’.

“But his appeal was thrown out by three senior judges, who said he could not complain given the breach of trust involved in his crimes.”

Leadership changes at Yeshivah Centre forbidden after abuse probe

February 1, 2016 9:31pm AEDT – Shannon Deery Herald Sun

“MELBOURNE’s troubled Yeshivah Centre has been banned from making changes to the school’s leadership in the wake of its sexual abuse crisis.

“Following a damning probe by the child abuse royal commission last year the centre announced it would replace its board of trustees and committee of management.

“But in a letter from Chabad headquarters in New York, the orthodox Jewish movement which oversees the Yeshivah Centre, the trustees have been barred from taking action.”

Goodbye And Thank You All

Failed Messiah Blog

“I had a much longer post I was moments away from publishing when my computer crashed and I lost it, so I’ll make this do-over post more concise.

“I’ve been working on a deal that would allow me to work on anti-poverty issues and today, after about a year of trying, that deal came to fruition. That means I’ll be leaving FailedMessiah.com, the website I founded almost 12 years ago.

“So let me thank all of you who read, commented and debated here, those of you who agreed with me and even those of you who did not, and those of you who sent me stories, tips and pashkvils.

“I’d like to encourage all of you to work to stop child sex abuse and to work to stop those who enable it or cover it up. I’d also like to encourage you to do what you can to bring some light to the haredi world which is, sadly, still shrouded in some intense darkness. No kid should go to 13 years of school and leave without a valid high school diploma, proficiency in the language of the country, and extensive knowledge of math, science, history and civics, even if their religious community’s elders claim it is their religious right to deprive them of this much-needed education. Please continue to fight for those kids.”

OPINION: After years of silence, we have learnt to talk about sexual abuse

Israel group launches public campaign regarding Malka Leifer

“Israel victim support and advocacy group Magen has launched a public campaign regarding the current Malka Leifer case. This follows the recent (and first-ever) public statement by one of Leifer’s alleged victims.

“Below is Magen’s public campaign. I encourage the community to get behind it. We need to support victims and alleged victims of child sexual abuse, and to put sexual abusers and alleged sexual abusers on notice. Enough! No more silence.”

Intervention of World Headquarters of Jewish movement angers sexual assault victims

More turmoil at Melbourne’s Yeshivah Centre (Part 2) – new public statements

“It seems that due to the international outcry relating to Chabad International’s outrageous letter, they have now issued a clarification letter (see below), which seems to suggest that they’ve done a massive backflip. They now seem to claim that, contrary to what they initially claimed, they in fact don’t have any power or authority over the Yeshivah Centre in Melbourne. Once again it is clear that Chabad Headquarters are just as chaotic and unprofessional as their Melbourne branch.”

What’s Happening to the Failed Messiah Blog?

“After 12 years of vigorous and acerbic muckraking of the orthodox world, Shmarya Rosenberg called it quits and sold Failed Messiah (FM) to Consolidated Holdings (CH).

“A source tells me the new owners are two orthodox business people, one from Chicago and the other from Los Angeles. The Only Simchas website claims the LA buyer is Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz (SYR). I am guessing they are right. I speculate the other buyer is Morris Esformes, a very successful Chicago area nursing home operator. They are both the kinds of philanthropists who would buy an entity for some goal other than profit. Esformes was willing to buy all of Rabbi Elimelech Meisels’ seminaries at a loss to get him out and clean up the sex abuse scandal. He withdrew because the conditions for the sale would have blocked him from cleaning up the place.”

Orthodox school criticised by inspectors for not preparing pupils for life in modern Britain

“Talmud Torah Toldos Yaakov Yosef, an independent school for boys aged from 2 to 12 in Hackney, north London was criticised for failing to prepare pupils for ‘life in modern Britain’.

“Following an unannounced visit to the school in December, Ofsted said that pupils’ reading and writing, educational resources and safety arrangements had still not improved sufficiently for the school to meet the standards expected of independent schools.”

We are 13 and 15 year old sisters and we were both sexually abused

These letters were submitted by two sisters who were molested from a very young age over a period of more than three years by an adult, male cousin who would often stay in their home. These letters speak to the pain and suffering endured by these young girls, to the trauma that continues to haunt them, to the sense of betrayal and loss that no child should ever know.

Thousands of ill-educated yeshiva boys by Naftuli Moster

“Each year, approximately 32,000 boys in New York City are not being taught science, history and geography among other subjects. If they’re lucky to be under the age of 13, they get 90 minutes of English and math, taught by untrained and unlicensed teachers.

“Alarmingly, when these boys turn 14, most of them spend 14 hours a day in school, from around 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., yet learn no general subjects at all. An estimated 17,500 additional boys attending schools in Rockland and Orange Counties are subjected to the same.”
