Just this past Saturday night, 6/4/16,Mendy Israel, who is under indictment for alleged felony sexual assaults on a child under 13 years of age, was still listed on the Boro Park Y website as a member of their board. This is disgraceful for a facility that serves children.
I am happy to report, perhaps as a result of my Saturday night posting, he is no longer listed on their website as a board member as of Monday 6/6/16, 4 p.m.
I am not sure if this is cosmetic and only involves a website edit or they genuinely got his resignation or removed him.
It would be helpful if the Y informed the public of how this was handled, and when. If it was my pressure that led to this change, I am proud to have served the public. But the board should be ashamed not to have done the right thing on their own.
A facility serving children owes its public a clear policy statement that it removes or suspends staff who are under indictment for child abuse. And then it owes it to the public to carry out the policy.
I encourage readers in Boro Park who use the Y to ask its administrators and board members about their policies and its practices in this case. Please keep this blog informed of what you find out. Equally important, inform us if the administration is not willing to answer such important questions.
But more important than policy is practice. Raise the alarm if you see him in the Y facility or in any other facility serving children. If you see him in such public places, please take pictures and share them here in the comments as well a raising the issue with the Y’s management.
