Beware of Moshe Friedman: Your Stomach Will Turn After You Read the Police Report

Moshe Friedman got a sweetheart deal which kept him out of jail and off the sex offender registry when he pled guilty on February 1, 2017 to a misdemeanor charge of “child endangerment” (NY Daily News).

Some of his defenders will say he didn’t really do anything serious. Maybe he just slapped a boy who was misbehaving. But you won’t say that after you read the police report with allegations of a string of sadistic sexual tortures that led to his indictment for multiple felony acts which could have put him in prison for decades.

According to the signed and sworn police report which was the basis of his indictment: The People of the State of New York County of Kings v Moshe Friedman:

…Between September 01, 2013 … and June 06, 2014 … at … [a yeshiva in Boro Park], the defendant … on multiple incidents per month

  • Did strike the informant’s hand with defendant’s hand when informant’s hand was injured and treated with a cast
  • Did place defendant’s hand on the informant’s exposed buttocks
  • Did grab the informant’s penis,
  • Did insert the defendant’s finger into the informant’s anus
  • Did insert a banana into the informant’s anus
  • Did put the defendant’s mouth on the informant’s buttocks
  • Did place the informant’s penis inside the defendant’s mouth
  • Did bite the informant’s penis with defendant’s mouth
  • Did tie a string around the informant’s penis
  • Did shove a rag into the informant’s mouth
  • Did tie the informant’s lips shut with string
  • Did display a gun to the informant and state to the informant in sum and substance, “you’d better not tell your parents, or I’ll kill you and your family.”

The … [boy was born in] 2007.

Sex Offender Yoel Oberlander is Arrested Again

Yoel Oberlander 6

Yoel Oberlander

In 2002 Yoel Oberlander of Monsey was convicted of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl. Thanks to Hasidic influence —  excessive improper influence — with the Rockland County prosecutor he got off without being sentenced to a single day in prison, just 6 years of probation and lifetime placement on the sex offender registry.

He went on to work as a delivery driver for Golden Taste, a kosher food products distributor. In 2012, while visiting the Bobov (48) Camp Shalva he took a detour into a bunk after lights out and fondled some kids. Bobov decided to deny anything happened but was willing to press charges for trespassing. So he did not get any jail time or another sex offense on his record. Continue reading

An Open Letter to Camp Shalvah Parents Whose Children May Have Been Molested (from the archives)

Three years ago the Bobov Camp Shalva covered up an intrusion into their bunks by a registered sex offender, Yoel Oberlander, ordering children not to share their experiences with police investigators. In the aftermath, I wrote this letter to parents of those campers. It was also read by Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg as one of his weekly recorded voice broadcasts posted on his “hotline.” I still am proud of it as model of messaging to parents of kids who may have been abused. It was my attempt to get around the administration’s bubbe maise that nothing happened which might better be called in this case a Bobov Maise. —    Yerachmiel Lopin

As you know, Yoel Oberlander went through a bunk. This is a man on the sex offender registry because he seized an eleven year old girl and did something to her.

The hanhalah says nothing happened to the children. Their lawyer Scharf says he did not have enough time to do anything. I don’t believe them.

The police arrested Oberlander because the camp accused him of trespassing and signed a formal complaint. Otherwise Oberlander, who had permission to do a food delivery would have been let go. So parents, ask yourself, would the Bobov dayan allow mesirah just because he walked in the wrong area? After all his last criminal charge was ten years ago and he claims to have done tshuvah.

The camp’s lawyer, Scharf, thinks that molesting requires a whole hinei muchan umizuman and a long brachah achronah. But the 13 minutes he was in the bunk was plenty of time to fondle some boys.

Others will say his tayvah is for girls. But, like other pedophiles his tayvah may not be for men or women, just for children, whether they are boys or girls.

I agree that he probably did not have enough time to touch all the children or even most of them. But what if he touched your child? Continue reading

Talk About Sheldon Silver Should Be about Hafner

Guest post by Michael Lesher

NYS Assemblyman Sheldon Silver

NYS Assemblyman Sheldon Silver

Judgment Day may finally have dawned for Sheldon Silver – but is the punishment he may be facing (if convicted) coming for all of the right reasons?

Not if you care about child sex abuse, and not if you get your information about Silver from the newspapers.

True, the charges of bribery and corruption are serious. If Silver is convicted for the crimes alleged in the federal complaint against him, he will be – and should be – facing a considerable prison sentence. And I’m glad to see the public scandal attending Silver’s arrest lapping at the doorstep of Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services. That agency, a moral cesspool for many years, needs to be exposed for all sorts of reasons.

But one particularly important case in which Silver played a personal role – though not a criminal one, as far as anyone knows – isn’t being written about anywhere, even as stories proliferate about his cozy and lucrative ties to New York City’s Orthodox community and his lavish support for its leadership. (Wayne Barrett has an important recent piece in the Daily News giving many details.) Those of us who care about child sex abuse cover-ups among Orthodox Jews ought to take advantage of this moment to try to extract a belated apology, at the very least, from the man who helped derail the justice system in the ugly case of Solomon Hafner 15 years ago. Did Bobov Cover Up Molesting at Shalvah, Its Boys Camp?

From my archives of 8/27/12, two years ago

Reporter Mary Murphy

Reporter Mary Murphy

I say there was a cover up based on earlier reports which were confirmed by Mary Murphy’s report on WPIX 11.

Rabbi Daniel Eidensohn used his blog Daas Torah to disparage her report as,

A fluff piece on alleged abuse at Camp Shalva. . .   An embarrassingly poor job of reporting which serves primarily to convey rumors and hearsay.

WPIX 11 reporter Mary Murphy said she interviewed the father of one camper, who spoke to his son who was in the camp. The father shared this communication from a camper.

Boys are saying they were tickled on their legs and you know what that means. . . . . . The kids were warned that morning that they should not be talking to each other about the incident.

Police Investigating Oberlander @ Bobov Camp Shalva

Police Investigating Oberlander @ Bobov Camp Shalva

This is shocking. If true, there was a cover up. If true, the reason the police had no allegations of molesting is because the boys were intimidated into lying to the police. If true, the police may have been quite competent but they were stymied by the same forces that routinely protect ultra orthodox molesters. If true, Jewish children are being endangered because a molester is not being prosecuted.  If true, this news report is not a fluff piece. If true, the only fluff is the Shalvah party line that tranquility reigns and the kids were safe that night.

I keep saying, “If true,” because Rabbi Eidensohn bases his dismissal of the story on the premise that Mary Murphy is a dumb, sloppy or dishonest reporter. He doesn’t explicitly say it but why else would he dismiss a report that documents molesting and a cover-up.

I am inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt. She is a professional with 30 years experience in NYC who has won 18 Emmy awards for reporting. Someone in her position does not take the risk of fabricating a story. In fact we can safely assume Continue reading

Golden Taste or Golden Touch

Golden Taste should never have employed Yoel Oberlander, a molester on the sex offender registry, as a driver to places which gave him access to children. Don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying they shouldn’t give him work, just not the kind of work that gives him access to children. I have no objection to employing him in the warehouse or factory.

According to the report by Mary Murphy on Tuesday night, it seems he is still working there. His car was parked there. Golden Taste employees kept saying ‘No comment” when Mary Murphy kept asking them if Oberlander worked there. In this case shteekah k’hodoah (silence is an admission). For all we know he is still making deliveries to places where his job gives him access to children. This is wrong.

Golden Taste should  remove him from all work which gives him access to children whether it is to a camp or a school. In addition, they owe it to the public to let them know if he still drives for them.  Until they act I encourage my readers to contact Golden Taste  by voice mail at (845) 356-4133 or fax at 845-356-4231. Let them know if you buy their products, what you think about Oberlander driving for them, and whether you will keep buying their stuff. If you know anyone in OK, which gives them their kashrus certification, please contact them and urge them to use their influence. A mehadrin establishment should also be scrupulous about protecting children.

I hope Golden Taste will listen. If they don’t, the leitzanim (jesters) will start calling them Golden Touch and mehadrin customers will not want to touch their products.

If you have contacted them, please let us know how it went.
